A UK-based specialist castings manufacturer supplying a diverse range of global industries including motorsport, defence and aerospace has been awarded a major international award for research and development.

Grainger & Worrall are amongst the winners of the prestigious 2012 R&D 100 Awards organised by the US R&D Magazine, which have been spotlighting revolutionary technologies for almost 50 years. The aluminium and iron castings experts won the award as co-developer of the ground-breaking Hybrid Ceramic-Sand Core Casting Technology (patent pending), working with primary developer and fellow award winners Southwest Research Institute based in San Antonio.

“These awards recognise the hundred most technologically significant products introduced to industry over the past 12 months and have long been regarded as a benchmark of excellence,” said Grainger & Worrall co-director Edward Grainger.

“Previous winners have included the companies which developed the halogen lamp, the liquid crystal display and the fax machine so I think we are in excellent company!”

“We are delighted to have won the award, fellow winners this year include Harvard University, Intel and the NASA Glenn Research Center – it’s a great honour and one that is well deserved by the teams at both Grainger & Worrall and Southwest Research Institute.”

“The Hybrid Ceramic-Sand Core Casting Technology took some three years to develop and provides a robust and scaleable method for performance enhancement of complex cored parts.”

“The combination of sand and ceramic in terms of casting may not be totally new, but it has not been done before within our chemically bonded sand core process – what we have achieved here will massively improve the cooling efficiency of cylinder heads, for example, the addition of the ceramic content provides a thermal inertness avoiding early resin breakdown and that facilitates core survivability during casting.”

Representatives of Grainger & Worrall will attend an awards banquet hosted by R&D Magazine in Orlando during November.

Grainger & Worrall are based in Bridgnorth and Telford, Shropshire. The company was recently presented with a Queen’s Award for Industry for Enterprise and Innovation by HRH the Duke of Gloucester.
